Our campaign will include many different activities such as a Vagina Carnival, Teach-In on violence against women in the Congo, silent auction, and productions of “The Vagina Monologues”, and “A Memory, A Monologue, A Rant and a Prayer” during the week of Valentine’s Day (Feb. 6-15, 2009). Our goal this year is to raise $5,000 for the South Carolina Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the Women’s Shelter, and Stop the Violence Against Women in the DRC. V-Day is a worldwide event made possible by Eve Ensler, and the purpose of this event is to raise funds to help stop violence against women. McKissick Museum

The exploits of Roberts Smalls have long been viewed as heroic and patriotic. His journey took him from an existence as a slave to a Union hero during the Civil War. In 1874 he was elected to the U.S. Congress where he served five terms. His life exemplified what many of the former enslaved African Americans were able to achieve with freedom. This exhibition is organized by the Avery Research Center at the College of Charleston. 803-777-7251.

Columbia's Longest Days: February 1865 is a fun and educational day for the family sponsored by the Greater Columbia Civil War Alliance to commemorate General Sherman's March to Columbia, S.C. and the burning of the city. 803-217-0071.

Take a walk through history on Saturday, February 7, when the Greater Columbia Civil War Alliance traces the path of General Sherman’s 1865 march on Columbia with a full day of activities in and around the city. Riverbanks Botanical Garden is one stop on the narrated bus tour that follows Sherman’s march through Lexington and into Columbia. On Riverbanks’ grounds, bus tour participants will visit the Saluda Mill ruins and view the granite abutments of the burned Saluda River Bridge, which was destroyed by the Confederate Army to slow advancing Union troops. Other activities on February 7 will include a grand ball, Civil War Expo at the Columbia Mills Building and a re-enactment of Union cannons firing on the State House. Satisfy your child’s “curious” nature for excitement and learning at EdVenture’s newest exhibit, “ Let’s Get Curious About Your Health will be the launch of the Big ED Health Team coinciding with the opening of the Curious George exhibit. Healthy Chefs’ Day by Columbia’s Cooking will demonstrate favorite foods from Africa from noon to 5pm. The American Heart Association will present “Curious George Goes to the Hospital” with heart health activities. Smiles For A Lifetime will be 11am to 12:30pm with The Tooth Fairy.
