On Friday, August 7, 2009, the Five Points Association will once again play host to the Annual Five Points School Supply Drive to benefit Rosewood Elementary, Hand Middle School and the Alston Wilkes Society. Anyone interested in dancing can learn the popular Swing Dance style in a vintage setting this summer through next year as Historic Columbia Foundation continues to host instructional classes and dances monthly at the historic Big Apple, 1000 Hampton Street. Columbia dance favorites Richard Durlach and Breedlove plan to take dancers back to the era of the Big Apple Dance Club. Richard and Breedlove teach, perform, and research swing, ballroom and vintage dances along with studying dance culture. Mending Masonry - August 8 - Huss Inc. joins us with Dan Elswick, Senior Historic Architecture Consultant with the State Preservation Office, to address the challenges in working with historic masonry. Back to School with Chicora College will be held on Thursday, August 27 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Hampton-Preston Mansion, 1615 Blanding Street. The event will feature a tour of the new Chicora College dorm room exhibit, lawn games, and a scavenger hunt. Participants can try on fashionable early 20th-century clothing and take a peek into a typical Chicora College student trunk with hands-on items and activities that explore the life of a student in Columbia at the turn of the century. The event will be held from noon until 2 p.m. and feature Victorian lawn games and hands-on activities which include crafting tea-time hats and learning the secret language of the fan.
