Unless you moved here from the Arctic, this week is proving to be daunting weatherwise for even the toughest Southern polar bears.  So we're trying to come up with indoor ideas for the free date.  Employ your competitive spirit: play the "look for" game at the mall - either Citadel or Northwoods will do... they both are heated.  Make a list of 9 objects that are not all that easy to find in a mall and write them down.  Here are some ideas: purple gloves; a hot pink bra; a toy train that actually whistles; something with the word "Disney" on it.  You stay together, and point (without a whole lot of yelling - remember there are normal people present) to the object and claim it.  Your name goes beside the object on the list AKA scorecard.  First guy to get 5 objects wins a kiss from the loser!

You'll long remember the first time you held your loved one’s hand as you ventured through the Enchanted Walking Trail.  Your journey begins with a 3-mile drive through millions of sparkling lights and hundreds of light displays. Then stretch your legs and your imagination at Santa’s Village & Winter Wonderland. When magic happens, lasting memories are made.  A magical date!  November 12 through January 2.

The Beggars Opera is former Czech Republic President and political dissident Vaclav Havel's adaptation of John Gay's 1728 ballad opera and is not an opera at all -- it is a comedy, a political satire and an explicitly damning commentary on totalitarianism.  Written in 1975, only 7 years after the Prague Spring, it places Macheath, Peachum and the rest of the original play's famous characters in a farcical underworld, ruled by an oppressive, powerful bureaucracy, which by its very nature takes away its citizens' humanity.  Originally performed in 1976 for a single night (it was then declaredsamizdat - illegal underground literature), its cynical overtones still reverberate with us today.  Performed by the College of Charleston Department of Theatre nightly from Thursday Nov. 11 through Tuesday, November 16 at Simons Center for the Arts.  Tickets $15 ea.   After this thought-provoking performance, discuss its significance over drinks at the Lounge at Wentworth Grill for quiet conversation fireside.
