From acute care to educational, community-based outreach programs, Greater Columbia has the medical professionals and state-of-the-art facilities to provide top-quality care to its residents.  With four outstanding hospitals and multi-specialty practices, you can rest assured that your healthcare concerns will be addressed and your expectations will be exceeded.
Palmetto Health’s Vision: To be remembered by each patient as providing the care and compassion we want for our families and ourselves.
Palmetto Health is the region’s largest, most comprehensive, locally owned, not-for-profit health care resource. It leads the region in the number and volume of inpatient and outpatient services provided because of the depth and breadth of available services including general, acute and critical care; the number and diversity of specialty physicians providing the full array of treatment from primary to emergency care and beyond; care that is delivered with compassion by a staff that records high levels of satisfaction in their work and achieves the highest level of patient satisfaction in the nation; and because of its emphasis on leadership development, patient safety and quality outcomes. All patients are provided needed care regardless of ability to pay.
The 1,138-bed system, a JCAHO-accredited institution, has more than 8,400 employees and 1,000 physicians. The hospitals of Palmetto Health provide care for 70 percent of the residents of Richland County and more than 55 percent of the healthcare for the combined Richland/Lexington county area. The latest technology and treatment protocols go hand-in-hand with quality patient care. Palmetto Health is composed of four outstanding hospitals—Palmetto Health Richland and Baptist in Columbia, and the Heart Hospital and Children’s Hospital in Columbia.
Baptist Easley Hospital, located in the beautiful upstate of South Carolina, is a leading community hospital which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2008. The hospital is the primary healthcare service provider in Pickens County. As of October 1, 2009, Palmetto Health entered a joint venture with Greenville Hospital System University Medical Center to operate Baptist Easley Hospital.
Our hospitals are highly respected, long-time members of the community. Each year, we treat nearly a half million patients, welcome more than 6,600 babies into the world, treat more than 80,000 pediatric patients and 3,000 cancer patients, accommodate more than 160,000 Emergency department visits, perform nearly 50,000 mammograms, and make close to 32,000 home care visits. The system also boasts Pastoral Counseling Centers in Columbia and Easley, as well as a strong occupational health program for area employers, HealthWorks.
Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia is a regional community teaching medical center that treats patients from every county in the state. Areas of excellence include cardiology, obstetrics (including high-risk pregnancy and genetic counseling), oncology, orthopaedics, neonatology, pediatrics, surgery and trauma. Palmetto Health Richland is home to Children’s Hospital which offers more than 30 medical subspecialties devoted to children. A new, freestanding Children’s Hospital opened in May 2008, and a new children’s surgery unit opened in June 2009.
In January 2006, the $80 million, 200,000-square-foot Palmetto Health Heart Hospital opened on the Richland campus. This is the state’s first comprehensive, freestanding heart facility, open to all physicians and patients. Richland is one of only two hospitals in the area licensed for cardiac surgery. Columbia Heart and Carolina Cardiac Surgery Associates opened a medical office building adjacent to the new Heart Hospital. Palmetto Health Heart Hospital has the lowest nurse-to-patient ratio in the Columbia metro area and 99% in the nation for patient satisfaction. Heart Hospital services include Catheterization Labs, Cardiac Diagnostics, Cardiovascular Surgery, Cardiac Rehabilitation, Pulmonary Rehabilitation, an accredited Chest Pain ER, and Mobile Coronary Care Unit.
Richland also is home to the Midlands’ only Level I trauma center, treating the area’s most critically ill and injured patients. In 1998, Richland was the site of the Carolinas’ first Gamma Knife Center for non-invasive radiosurgery. The latest Gamma Knife technology arrived on campus in late fall 2008. The hospital’s Total Joint Center offers a unique program for hip and knee replacements designed to meet all patient needs, from pre-operative information through surgery and follow-up rehabilitation. In 2007, Richland opened its Robotic Surgery Center, the newest advancement in minimally invasive surgery. Richland also is home to the McCausland Center for Brain Imaging featuring 3T-MRI which opened in 2007, and the Simulation Center (2008), both partnerships with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and Health Sciences South Carolina.
Richland also has an extensive geriatric medicine division, including the Senior Primary Care Practice, a primary care physician practice exclusively for older adults, and multiple Palmetto SeniorCare locations for the medically fragile elderly.
Palmetto Health Baptist in Columbia is one of the state’s most respected healthcare providers, committed to the spiritual, physical and mental health needs of its patients. Areas of excellence include behavioral care, obstetrics, oncology, orthopaedics, surgery and women’s services. Home to The Birthplace, more than 3,600 babies were delivered at Baptist last year alone. The hospital was the site of the state’s first Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Imaging Center, which upgraded to a PET-CT in 2007.
Palmetto Health Baptist, along with Richland, is a site of the Palmetto Health Cancer Centers and Breast Center, the largest of its kind in the region. The Breast Center is the state’s first nationally accredited center by the American College of Surgeons’ National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers. It has long been the area’s leader in new technology and treatment options, and was the first to offer a weekly breast cancer conference. In 2004, Baptist became the first in the area to offer full-field digital mammography. Baptist’s multi-phase $57 million expansion and renovation project for surgical services, perinatal and Level III NICU services will be completed in 2010. The new NICU with all-private rooms opened in 2008.
Patients who receive care at Palmetto Health hospitals and facilities also benefit from Palmetto Health’s strong affiliation with the University of South Carolina, which includes research partnerships with the USC School of Medicine, 12 physician residency programs and eight fellowship programs.
Palmetto Health Parkridge, which includes an Ambulatory Surgery Center, Diagnostic Center and Medical Office Building, opened its Convenience Care facility in summer 2008. This physicians’ office is open daily; no appointments are needed. Parkridge is the planned site of a future hospital, Palmetto Health Baptist Parkridge.
The Palmetto Health Physician Practices network includes primary care healthcare professionals and specialists who are highly trained to meet their patients’ medical needs. They provide comprehensive medical care from routine short-term needs like annual physicals to the management of chronic diseases. These physicians offer quality care in a variety of locations convenient to home or work.
In addition to its wide variety of clinical services, Palmetto Health is unique in its level of commitment to community outreach. In its first decade of outreach, more than $24 million in healthcare services was provided to underserved populations. For the past two years, Palmetto Health has been named by Modern Healthcare as one of the Top 100 Best Places to Work in Healthcare in the nation. It was the only hospital in South Carolina to receive this honor. In 2009, Palmetto Health was selected as one of the Top 20 “Best Places to Work” by the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, the Society for Human Resource Management-SC State Council and SC BIZ magazine.

For more than thirty-five years, Lexington Medical Center has endeavored to bring the very best in medical care to area residents. Since its inception in 1971, the hospital has expanded from its single main campus located in West Columbia to a network of facilities that include six community medical centers, strategically placed around Lexington County in Irmo, Swansea, Chapin, Batesburg-Leesville, Gilbert and the town of Lexington.
Lexington Medical Center also operates the state’s largest nursing home facility, Lexington Medical Extended Care, as well as Carroll Campbell Place, a unique setting for Alzheimer’s patients. Added to this is Lexington Medical Center Occupational Health, which offers a wide range of clinical occupational services for area businesses. And with a physician network offering care from internal medicine to obstetrics, and orthopaedics to family medicine, health care is accessible and convenient to all residents of Lexington County and the surrounding area.
Staffed by the finest health care professionals and utilizing state- of-the-art facilities, Lexington Medical Center has undergone the largest expansion by any medical facility in South Carolina. The main hospital now covers more than 1 million square feet.
Major components of the expansion include 21 new digitally-integrated operating rooms equipped with the latest technology available to OR’s, new preoperative and post-operative recovery areas, as well as expanded clinical and staff support space.
The construction also features a new patient bed-tower to allow for more inpatient capabilities.
Lexington Medical Center performs more general surgeries than any other hospital in the area as well as more neurosurgeries and continues to expand with the latest technology available and the state’s most modern  diagnostic heart catheterization lab.
Tremendous strides in orthopaedics have also brought Lexington Medical Center to the forefront in this area of expertise; the hospital has teamed together several of the most experienced orthopaedic medicine and surgical specialists to form a premiere orthopaedic group.
Located on the main campus, these physicians practice in the first medical office building in South Carolina to receive the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) designation.
Lexington Medical Center provides the best technology in the diagnosis and treatment for several areas, including cancer treatment and radiology. The first hospital in the area to provide IGRT, the most advanced radiation therapy available for the treatment of cancer, Lexington Medical Center has remained at the forefront in providing specialty technology. Other technologies include open and short bore MRI units and Position Emission Topography or PET.
Prostate cancer is another area in which Lexington Medical Center is the only hospital in the area to provide the latest technology for treatment and diagnosis. The prostascint scan allows physicians to see where a prostate cancer might have spread in determining the best course of treatment for the patient. Lexington Medical Center is only the second hospital in the state to offer this technology.
In its efforts to provide continuity of care for women, Lexington Medical Center provides an array of women’s educational programs on topics such as menopause and breast cancer. The “5 Days Detection to Diagnosis” program allows women who have discovered a lump in their breast to be seen by a physician, have medical tests completed and a diagnosis rendered with a recommendation for treatment within a five-day window. A panel of experts meets weekly at the Breast Cancer Conference to review patient cases to determine the best course of treatment, so the patient can be assured they are receiving the best of care from a number of specialists in the field. This landmark program has served as a model for other hospitals across the nation.
More than 3,000 babies come into the world at Lexington Medical Center each year. The hospital was the first in the area to provide fully private, all inclusive labor and delivery suites. Lexington Medical Center is the only area hospital with an innovative Doula program. Doulas are women who serve as a personal delivery coach to mothers. The program is free; Doulas can also help new families acclimate to the challenges that a new baby can bring to their home for a small fee. Another pioneering program at Lexington Medical Center, the Kangaroo Care program, helps mothers bond with their premature babies.
Through technological capabilities, a countywide network of community medical centers and a committed staff, Lexington Medical Center will continue to meet the health care needs of our community well into the future.

Our state-of-the-art laboratories are staffed by highly qualified specialists trained in sleep medicine, respiratory therapy, neurology and pulmonary medicine.
In all cases, the people of Providence are widely recognized for their compassion, in addition to their professionalism. They capture beautifully the spirit of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine who founded Providence in 1938.
