The North Area is found north of downtown Columbia by traveling out Main Street and then following SC 215 or US 321. These roads go out through older industrial areas and then turn into country roads. This rural area is dotted with farms and a few housing developments. It is particularly attractive to people who want to live in a rural area, but maintain a close proximity to the city. I-20 is convenient with exits at both SC 215 and US 321. The topography is rolling and the soil varies from clay to sand. Deciduous and pine forests blanket most of the area, and many creeks, ponds and lakes are present. Lake Monticello Lake Monticello is owned and managed by the South Carolina Electric & Gas Company, who also own and manage Lake Murray, a 50,000 acre reservior. Lake Monticello covers about 7,000 acres. The beautiful main lake is ideal for boating, water skiing, and fishing. A marina with docks, five beaches with picnic areas, and an 18-hole, 72-par PGA championship golf course are available. Golf LinRick Golf Course is a championship 18 hole course that is operated by the Richland County Recreation Commission. It is self-supported and receives no taxes to operate. It is located on Campground Road between SC 215 and US 321. It features 8 ponds and has a picturesque setting on 250 acres. A Technology Center opened in 2004, that offers computer classes for all ages. There is also a Health & Wellness Center open to the public that offers pilates, tai chi, retirement & financial planning.
