Learn to Knit in a Day Participants explore basic knitting techniques such as the knit stitch, purling, cast-on, bind-off, working in two colors, decreasing and increasing, and reading basic patterns. Supplies include: a set of needles, yarn, and a binder with beginner's patterns and resources. We start off the day with coffee and refreshments, take a break for lunch (provided) and complete several small projects.   February 3, 2008 Afternoon of Spirituals In conjunction with celebrations of Black history month, Allen University Chorale and faculty presents an evening of African American spirituals in the museum galleries. The University Chorale, one of the primary student ambassador groups, and the 7th district of the AME Church completed a recording project featuring student soloists last April. Turku plays traditional music from the western half of the Silk Road, and Free Planet Radio plays a fusion of jazz, classical and world music. The series features two films: Screaming Masterpiece (shown on March 21) navigates Iceland's pop/rock explosion spearheaded by artists like Bjork and Sigur Ros, and The Sound of Rio (shown May 30) explores the Brazilian sound of the choro, a precursor to bossa nova. The Columbia Guitar Society plays a short set before the Sound of Rio, and Screaming Masterpiece is preceded by a special Nordic pop dj set. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Show starts at 8:00 p.m. Fair trade coffee and desserts available for purchase. Tickets are $12; students $7; $10 museum members; $5 student members.   February 8-10, 2008 Orchids on the Riverbanks Festival Prepare to be inspired by hundreds of blooming orchids displayed in every shape, color and size imaginable at the Orchids on the Riverbanks Festival. Riverbanks has once again teamed up with the South Carolina Orchid Society and Ikebana International Chapter 182 to produce a provocative exhibition of living orchid plants and arrangements perfectly timed for Valentines weekend. Purchase an orchid that is as unique as your Valentine from an orchid vendor on site. The event will feature educational seminars on a variety of orchid related topics as well as ikebana design.   February 12, 2008 Evening for Educators Offered in connection with each major exhibition during the school year, the "Evening for Educators" program, sponsored by SCANA, provides guidance to teachers in using the Museum as a valuable resource both in their classrooms and as a field study option. During the evening educators enjoy a wine and cheese reception, receive a guided tour of the exhibition and a customized educators' kit, which includes information about the exhibition, a CD with images of the art, and sample lesson plans that meet state and national curriculum standards. These kits allow educators to implement museum-designed lesson plans in their own classrooms, reaching hundreds of students.
