From Here to Timbuktu takes visitors on a journey through West Africa's spectacular and diverse geographic regions. Along the way children and adults are immersed in an adventure of discovery as they learn about the rhythm of West African life. In each geographic region children are introduced to the foodways, customs and culture of the people who call that area home. From the coastal cities, children take a sojourn through the treetops of mountain rainforests, carefully making their way to the open-air family compound on the Savannah. Finally, children trek the last leg of their journey to the Sahel where they will find Timbuktu, an ancient center of learning. From Here to Timbuktu is a one-of-a-kind hands-on experience!

Dale Chihuly: Seaforms includes approximately 35 glassworks and preliminary sketches from his Seaform series – colorful, undulating shell-like forms within forms, inspired by the artist’s love of the sea. Chihuly’s Seaforms are reminiscent of sea creatures and shells, yet they are unpredictable abstract configurations with a transparency and colorful luminosity. Families of Seaforms are large vessels with smaller and smaller shapes nestled within them. The accompanying sketches give insight into the artist’s creative process, and are beautiful artworks on their own. Chihuly’s Seaforms were created over a 14-year period during the 1980s and ’90s.

Renowned photographer and South Carolina native Constantine Manos, presents an illustrated lecture of A Greek Portfolio, now on exhibit in the Mamie and William Andrew Treadway, Jr. Gallery , as well as some of his contemporary photography work. Manos was born in Columbia to Greek immigrant parents and began his photographic career when he was 13-years-old. To date, his photographs are in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and other international museums. The Columbia Museum of Art and the Art Institute are the only two museums in the country that own a set of prints from Manos’ 1972 book, A Greek Portfolio. This will be the first time Manos has visited Columbia in nearly 20 years, and the lecture is followed by a brief question and answer period and a book signing of A Greek Portfolio. The South Carolina Solar Council (SCSC) is coordinating three FREE workshops for homeowners across the state. These workshops, located in Columbia, Charleston, and Greenville are designed to help homeowners statewide to learn more about the options for using solar technology in their home, as well as the various state and federal benefits for doing so. Free of charge, homeowners will be given the chance to learn about various types of solar energy. Bruce Wood from SunStore Solar, an expert with over 25 years of experience, will highlight the benefits and incentives for going solar, and provide information on solar hot water heating and solar photovoltaic, the leading solar energy technology for the home. After the workshops, homeowners will have to opportunity to speak one-on-one with solar experts and vendors about any other specific questions they may have, and get more information on what to do next. St. David's Episcopal Church to Host Blessing of the Animals.The public is invited to bring their pets to a Blessing of the Animals to be held at 4:30 p.m., Sept. 28, at St. David Episcopal Church, 605 Polo Rd., in northeast Columbia, S.C. The Blessing of the Animals is a remembrance of the life of St. Francis, whose feast day is Oct. 4. It reminds us that all of Godƒs creation is blessed, including our pets. The event will take place in the breezeway between the churchƒs sanctuary building and parish hall. Please have your pets contained on a leash or in a container. In addition, earlier that weekend, the churchƒs menƒs club will sell barbecue meals on Sept 26-27 at the church. Meals will include pork barbecue, hash and rice, baked beans, cole slaw, and bread. Cost is $8 for adults and teens, and $4 for children 12 and under. The church will provide take-out only on Friday, Sept. 26, from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., geared especially to local businesses, and take-out and eat-in meals in the parish hall from 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27. Businesses desiring to reserve meals in advance for pick-up on Friday may contact Mitch Mitchell, 736-1147 or 609-1631. The event is a fund-raiser titled Barbecue for Mission. Proceeds will support a St. David's parish member's two-and-a-half year volunteer commitment at an orphanage and health center in Honduras. Established 25 years ago, St. David's is committed to seeking and serving Jesus Christ and inviting all to share God's love. Services are held at 8 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. every Sunday, with children's special worship at 9:15 a.m. on the first Sunday of the month during the academic year and every Sunday during the summer. Worship is conducted by Rev. Robert Chiles, with music provided by the St. David's choir accompanied by piano or the church's 100-year-old pipe organ. Episcopalians worship in a sacramental tradition that balances and emphasizes both holy scripture and tradition, and focuses on a mystical encounter with the presence of God through the communion gifts of bread and wine.
