This large rural county lies to the north of Charleston and is the fastest growing county in the state of South Carolina. It has all of the conveniences of a major city, but maintains a rural flavor. It includes the incorporated areas of Hanahan and Goose Creek, which are directly outside the city limits of North Charleston. Berkeley County SC reaches from the Charleston Harbor in the south to the Santee River in the north, and is geographically the largest of three counties that make up the Charleston SC metro area. US 52 is the major north-south artery through the county and along which is most commercial and retail development.

Daniel Island
Daniel Island is a large island located 3 miles north of the Charleston Harbor between the Cooper and Wando Rivers. It began as a a planned community in 1995 and continues today. Daniel Island offers its residents a quaint town-like atmosphere that is thriving and growing where people live, work, learn and play. Space and Naval Warfare (SPAWAR) Systems Center and other defense contracting companies are also located in Hanahan. Hanahan is also experiencing rapid growth in the housing sector. A Most Interesting History
Why we love it: Old Santee Canal Park is centered where the southernmost section of the canal enters the quiet waters of Biggin Creek and the surrounding swamps. The high bluff here at the headwaters of the Cooper River has, for generations, been known as Stony Landing. Because of the natural advantages of its setting, it became a crossroads of early commerce. Boat traffic from the port of Charleston took on the goods of the upcountry and unloaded finished products for overland transportation to the growing frontier and the Indian nations. The construction of the canal further solidified the importance of this area. While earlier buildings had certainly occupied this site, the plantation house presently at Stony Landing bluff was built circa 1843 by Charleston merchant John Dawson. The house has been restored and is open to the public for tours. Also within the park is the Berkeley Museum and Heritage Center, presenting more than 12,000 years of area history. {www.oldsanteecanalpark.org}
